The award-winning project showcases 18,500 feet of Uponor’s Wirsbo hePEX™ and Multi-layer Composite (PEX-AL-PEX) tubing for the radiant floor heating and snow-melting systems installed in Wormley Row, a 125-year-old landmark school building turned luxury condominium complex located in the prestigious Georgetown section of Washington, D.C.

The Wormley Row project was submitted to PPI by David Kinney of LyondellBasell Industries, a multinational manufacturer of polyolefin materials.

“Successful renovations of high-profile structures such as Wormley Row provide an excellent showcase for the cost savings, energy efficiency, rapid installation and comfort delivered by PEX plastic pipe,” says Kinney.

The project team on the Wormley Row restoration included Chris Morrison of Cunningham | Quill Architects; Steve Kay of Encore Development; Dan Foley of Foley Mechanical, Inc.; and Summit Engineering.

“Our charge from the builder was to deliver a best-of-the-best heating and cooling system to meet its vision for the project,” explains Dan Foley, president of Foley Mechanical, Inc., of Lorton, Va. “With ceiling heights of 9 to 14 feet and 6-foot to 8-foot-high windows, ‘best of the best’ meant a radiant floor heating system.”

While radiant heat provides interior comfort and efficiency, a radiant snow-melting system provides safe travel on the outside parking ramp and public walkways.
